Well it all starts with a good old fashioned pencil sketch from the photos you have supplied, at this point it's worth mentioning that the photos are the key to a good caricature. Happy smiling photos shot from the front at a good size to accurately gauge the features of the face. Once I have a sketch that I am happy with I scan it into the computer.
That's when the caricature comes to life. I use a Wacom pressure sensitive drawing tablet to paint the image. It's a process very similar to the traditional painting process, without waiting around for washes to dry.
Why work digitally?
I have used traditional materials to draw with for many years and even now I sketch on paper with a pencil to start the process. Digital painting isn't the software painting for you, it takes many hours to produce my caricatures but the end result is worth it! Other advantages to digital painting is if changes are needed they can be made with relative ease
My Typical Computer Setup
compared to traditional means and files can be sent easily by email and used for a variety of purposes such as invites, t-shirts etc.
Finally, I use Giclee printing onto 280gsm soft white cotton archival quality Fine Art Paper, using a 12 colour pigment ink system using Lucia inks which offer excellent colour fastness and stability with a remarkably wide colour gamut.
